Oistins Sightseeing and Festival

31 March, 2009 (03:22) | Uncategorized | By: daddyo

Oistins is located on the south coast of Barbados. There are nearby areas around Oistins where there are various villas available.

Oistins is most famous for its fishing community, fish fry meals, local fishing market and the fishing festival held between the months of March and April. This year’s fish Festival will be held between 1 March to 30 March 2009 (the date is still yet to be confirmed). The festival is expected to last all day, possibly going into the early mornings of the next day. The day will be packed with lots of activities to do including boat races, grease-pole and fish boning tournaments.

In Oistins, tourists will see plenty of boats because they will be bringing in fish on a regular basis. There will be more fishing boats hauling up in the dockyards starting from November because this is when the fishing season starts. Also, because Oistins is so very famous for its fishing community, the village also has a fishing complex nearby that people can go to. The different types of fishes that the locals sell include Tuna, Mahi Mahi, Kingfish and Flying Fish. All are available at affordable prices.

There is also a large shopping complex in Oistins. Oistins shopping complex doesn’e sell many souvenirs but it does sell a lot of necessities! Therefore, the local supermarket doesn’t really cater for tourists as such. Also, Oistins is a very good place to be in during the night, especially at the weekends. Next to the fish market, you will see lots of stalls setup selling fresh cooked fish as well as salads.

The music is very loud with reggae and calypso music filling the air. Many of the locals will just go off and start dancing and having fun until the early mornings on the Oistins beach. Be the first to get to the Kiosks for the cuisine as it may run out on the weekends due to the crowd. The cuisine is amazing and is available every night of the week at very competitive rates as low as BDS $15 per person for a full meal!

Other things to do in Oistins include sea bathing, picnics or having meals on the Miami Beach. Have a meal the true bajan way by renting out beach chairs and umbrellas.

For a Caribbean holiday in Oistins don’t miss out on visiting Barbados, one of the best islands on the Caribbean coast. The Oistin Villa in Barbados is the most amazing holiday villa to stay at. If your thinking of going to the Caribbean, make sure you book your villa at Coverley House, a Holiday Villa in Barbados that can be booked for a reasonable price. Look at the Coverley House Testimonials Page for reassurance.

I Get Flustered During Christmas Time

31 March, 2009 (03:22) | Uncategorized | By: daddyo

Flipping Christmas

Christmas can bring happiness, joy and stress, that is, for sure. Annually, I get myself all stressed out over the hustle and bustle of the Christmas season. When I think about it, I view Christmas in two lights, as both the happiest and most tiring day of the calender year. Why? Due to that I think about something that I haven’t done at all this year, and with another one approaching quickly I don’t know if I’ll be able to make my goal. Me having my baby isn’t making the season any easier on me. My husband Labron, just always keep it cool for me and make sure that I don’t think about it too often during these times. Everything down to picking up my new upside down christmas tree stresses me out!

I always believe though that maybe it’s the only time of this year that I get to notice some of the things I don’t possibly have, that’s why I go to this some sort of Christmas stress. Every year when Christmas eve arrives things seem like they will be ok. I get to see people I don’t always see often, especially my parents, since they live in New Orleans and we are in the state of California, and even my nieces and nephews. That being said, on occasion we don’t push them to come to our house over the holidays for the reason that I know they have a lot of stuff to do as well.

Due to everything, I try to do a few things I’ve learned over the years to distract myself. I usually plan ahead and list down all the things to prepare. My hubby tries his hardest to help me by making suggestions on how we can stretch our dollars even further during the holiday seasons. Next year my hope is that we will be able to spend Christmas away from home, the hope being the stress levels would be lower. I look forward to things I have coming that will bring me pure enjoyment, for example I have my chandelier christmas tree.

Japanese Garden Ideas

Gardening is a wonderful activity you can enjoy in many ways. It is nice to see your garden grow over the years and to see the result of all your creativity and hard work. A Japanese garden is no different, you would think, but in fact it is. Japanese garden ideas create a different kind of intrinsic beauty that you need to learn to appreciate. Most people need to get used to a Japanese garden, there are few people who love this type of garden the first time they see it. Most people will only enjoy the beauty of this type of design if they can find the internal peace to see each little element at its own. Both people can use some of the basic Japanese garden ideas we will take a look at in this article.

Numerous different Japanese garden ideas

There are of course many different Japanese garden ideas but there are some common grounds we call the basics. Almost all Japanese garden ideas will point to nature as being the most beautiful work of art of all, that is one of the basic principals. The Japanese garden is always designed with nature in mind, this means the garden should always reflect the things we see in nature. When we design a yard with this kind of design it might look unorganized and wild but when we take a closer look it is often perfectly in balance, a little replica of nature at its finest. And in fact that is a type of perfection we do not see much in other types of garden design.

Rocks and Space

A well known kind of Japanese garden ideas are the rock gardens and they are much more orderly than other Japanese garden ideas. Rocks represent mountains and hills in nature and small rocks and pebbles can create the image of a river bedding. Small Japanese trees and shrubs are the image of what nature creates on a large scale.

Another special style element in our Japanese garden ideas is empty space, it may sound strange but this space is one of the most important style elements that the Japanese garden has. It is one of the traditions you can follow when you decide to design your own Japanese garden. The empty space forms a retreat to all the beauty of the trees, plants and other elements, it reminds you of what you have missed and what you have found. These are just those elements what people need to learn to understand before they can fully appreciate Japanese garden ideas.

Separate the garden from reality

Some features have a deeper meaning in the garden than we are used to like fences and gates, in the western countries they are used to keep strange people away from the house and to keep pets and little children in the yard. Japanese garden ideas follows totally different traditions, here those structures are used to separate the garden from reality and to let the people experience the beauty and serenity of the garden.

Learn How to Grow Grape

31 March, 2009 (03:22) | Uncategorized | By: daddyo

How to grow grapevine is something that is quite easy to do once you get to know the basics. Although it might be underrated to say that it is easy because you will need a lot of patience in order for you to have it grow, and patience is not one of the easiest things to come by. But as they say, good thing comes for those who wait; your time won’t be put to waste on waiting for your vines to produce fruit.
Spending some time in preparing the soil before planting is the key. There are fertilizers that come in droves and are available in any reputable garden store, but it is also a great way to use the most natural fertilizer that has been used for ages: manure.
The fertilizer needs to be put deep in the soil. If you are using organic fertilizer, it is important to check if it is well rotted, as fresh manure can cause the vine roots to burn. It is also okay to use different alternatives such as lead composts that come from oak, ash, and lime trees. Never use beech leaves as a fertilizer for grapes; this can be a little too acidic for the grape vines.
Some vines are planted in pots. Here are some special information about planting up the grape-vine by using pots:

•    Make sure that the root ball is not yet grown too much in a small pot for too long

•    It should be plant as deep as just below the original compost surface in the pot so that

the root ball will be enclosed with soil.
The vine should be ideally planted in a way that the roots are kept cool and the vine should be facing up the sun towards a sunny spot on walls or trellis among others. For you to be able to keep the roots in low temperature, place some stones or rocks around the base to help prevent direct sunlight from getting into the roots.
Pruning is also an important and required task in order for the grape vines to do their best. You will never get to know how to grow the finest grapes unless you have the knowledge behind the importance of pruning it. Pruning of grapevine is the key in order for the plant to achieve not just any ordinary fruit, but the most succulent ones. If you do not prune your vines, the root will then be overworking to give nutrients to each and every cane, making the canes not to get the sufficient nourishment that they need, making it a very weak plant overall. When this happens, the fruit that you have been waiting for so long will only be the meager ones, the ones that weak vines can make. If you are going to prune, however, the vines will be strong, and they will be capable of bearing fine and abundant grapes.
Learning how to grow grapes is something that is easy to do once you have the will to learn about it. When we are passionate about something, we tend to create it. Try to make something special, create a wonderful grape-vine garden.

Good Gardening Ideas

Here are a few gardening tips that should work well for you. Looking for gardening tips? You should know: how much sunlight the plot is going to have, fertilizer types, your mulch and soil management. The tools necessary along with the type of tiller and watering system that would make your gardening job more convenient are things which you ought to know.

Herb Gardening Tips

This helps you to save much time. Having a friend to help you with advice is a good idea and then having the area in front of you will really get the brainstorming started. Consider all the points.

Gardening Tip #2: The garden is a success if the soil is prepared well. Not all plants can grow in the same type of soil, different soil for different types of plants and herbs. For growing vegetables or herbal plants, use organic fertilizers as they would not affect the natural flavor of the food. Wooden chip mulch or any good compost would be a better choice than ordinary fertilizer.

You could easily have a backyard compost heap. Though fresh home brew compost is a rich source of nutrients, it may not be as realistic as one imagines, for the herbal and vegetable garden. Though mulch is a good alternative to home compost mixture, ensure that you use redwood or pine as it breaks faster. Ensure that you mix the ingredients well whether you prefer to use mulch, compost or fertilizer.

Herb Gardening Advice

Just lay them out ion top of the soil and check whether you like what you see. I firmly believe it is wise to plant plants together that have similar characteristics. Plants with larger spread should be planted together. A great arrangement is to put the taller pants at the back and the smaller ones in the front, then you can see them all at once.

Gardening Adivce

Gardening Tip 4: Watering your garden is very important. Depending on the size of your house, watering a garden can be tough. An automatic watering system is a wise alternative, if you want your garden to grow on its own. Ranging from a big sprinkler system to a timer on a hose sprinkler, these automatic systems can provide the solution. Gardening is a rewarding hobby, which not only provides shade, beauty and sometimes food also!

Equipment for your Garden Pond

30 March, 2009 (22:07) | Uncategorized | By: daddyo

Lining a Pond

One of the most crucial aspects of constructing your pond is ensuring that you have enough pond liner. Having too little pond liner means you will need to rethink the size of your pond or you will have a pond that is not always watertight.

When measuring your pond you need to consider not just the length and width that you pond will take on the ground, but also the depth of the pond into the ground i.e. you need to know the pond’s volume.

A good rule of thumb is to measure your pond and then add a couple of feet to both measurements. This will allow your rubber pond liner to sit slightly proud of your hole in the ground ensuring that your pond is fully watertight and that your pond water does not seep away.

Pond Filtration

Another essential part of building a pond is a good filtration system. If you look for pond filtration on the net you will find a good selection to choose from.

But what is it you need out of a filtration system? To achieve an efficient biological surface you must ensure that the water that enters the filtration is rich in oxygen. This helps the friendly bacteria to oxidise the waste products through the nitrogen cycle. This is called aerobic filtration. Filter systems must fulfil the following criteria:

  • The filter volume should be at minimal 10% of the ponds volume.
  • The flow rate you should aim to achieve is to turn over at least half the ponds volume once per hour.
  • The filter should have several chambers which can be which can be kept separate and emptied individually when cleaning. And a vortex should be included.
  • The biological surface area should be at least one square metre per ten cubic metres of pond water.
  • An ultra violet clarifier should be installed to eliminate single celled algae, which causes green water.

There are two main types of filtration. The first type of filter is where the water is removed from the pond via a bottom drain and is called a gravity feed. It is then forced via gravity through the filter which is sited buried in the ground close to your pond so that the water level in both your filtration and pond are the same. The water is then returned to the pond via a dry sited pond pump through an outlet in the side wall of the pond below the waterline. Because the biological surfaces will have depleted the oxygen during oxidisation of the waste products it is important at this stage to use a venturi on the outlet to oxygenate the returned water.

The second main filtration type and probably the more familiar is a pressurised feed filter. This involves an internal solid handling pump at the deepest part of the pond pumping water through a flexible pipe up to the filter which is sited above the surface level of the pond, which allows the water to return by the forces of gravity.

Water Pumps

Without a good pond pump, a water garden is at the mercy of bacteria, lack of oxygen, and the settling of dirt and debris. A dependable pond water pump does wonders in creating and maintaining a healthy environment and balanced ecosystem in your garden pond by circulating and oxygenating water continuously. Additionally, the water pump plays an important role in keeping humans and pets safe by helping to prevent unwanted insect pests from breeding and infesting the area. You can find a wide variety of pondpumps to fit every small pond application from good aquatic and water garden retailers.

If you are serious about having a garden pond whether its for wild life or koi, have a look round for pond and aquatics retailers that not only sell you the product but also provide good advice and after sales assistance.

Making That Perfect Arts And Crafts Dream Catcher

29 March, 2009 (22:38) | Uncategorized | By: daddyo

the craft

The dream catcher has been a part of Native American culture for generations. The positive dreams would slip through the hole in the center of the dream catcher, and glide down the feathers to the sleeping person below. The negative dreams would get caught up in the web, and expire when the first rays of the sun struck them. Dream catchers have become extremely popular with people who enjoy arts and crafts. In this article, we’ll walk you step by step through the process of creating one of these beautiful pieces.

Dream catchers were originally made out of willow, sage and deer sinew. Modern dream catchers are made with wood or metal wrapped in leather strips and artificial sinew. The decoration of the web along with the shape, size and colors used is left to the artistic tastes of the individual. Feathers attached to the dream catcher are meant to assist the flight of good dreams. Although selecting the materials is usually a matter of preference, typically to make a dream catcher you will need about 7 feet of thin suede, glue, a 6 inch metal or wooden ring, waxed nylon string, 12-16 pony beads, 12-16 feathers, scissors and a clothes pin. The colors of the beads and feathers can be any you choose.

The most difficult thing about the arts and crafts project of making dream catchers is making the web. Once you have covered the hoop with leather or suede and the glue has dried completely, tie a long strand of sinew or another piece of suede onto the hoop with a secure knot. Carefully work your way around the hoop making a slip stitch at about every inch, or inch and a half. Ideally, the spaces should be uniform but don’t worry if they are not perfect. Once you get back to the top, slip stitch into the first loop that you made and repeat the process until you have just a small hole in the center. If you want to make your dream catcher more decorative, you can slip beads onto the web as you go. Tie a knot at the end and cut off any excess material.

To make the loop to hang your Dream Catcher, use a 12″ piece of suede lacing. Fold it in half and tie a knot in the open end. At the top of the ring, attach the lacing and slip the loop end through the ring and then around the ring and over the knot. Pull the lacing tight to secure it in place. To make the hanging sections, cut three 8″ pieces of suede. Tie two 8″ pieces of suede lacing about one third of the way up each side of the ring using a double knot. Slip 3 colored pony beads onto each piece of lacing and secure with a knot. Tie the last 8″ piece of lacing to the top middle of the ring. Slip three pony beads onto each piece of lacing. Finally, push two feathers up inside the beads on each piece of lacing.

The dream catcher has become the favorite of all native art and craft pieces because of their delicate beauty and accompanying ethereal legend. They are available in arts and crafts stores in a variety of colors and sizes. As you become more experienced with the craft of making dream catchers, you can experiment with different materials so that you get the look that you want. Use a variety of beads and leather colors to match the decor of your home. If you become proficient enough, you can offer your projects for sale at craft fairs. Most importantly, enjoy the beauty of the stunning pieces that Native American crafters have passed on for generations. Sweet dreams.
